The event has been part of the CART series for 25 years, with the first race taking place in 1982. The event was suspended in 2008 when Champ Car merged with the IndyCar League.

The race returned in 2015 as part of the 2016 IndyCar Series season from 23-26 June 2016 and the race winner was Will Power, Tony Kanaan, and Graham Rahal have finished second and third respectively. The race weekend includes all three series as support races as part of the Mazda Indy Road and Pirelli World Challenge (GT/GT-A/GT Cup and GTS).
